Core Components of Oberg’s Necker Tooling
Necking Dies
The backbone of the necking process, these dies are crafted from hardened steel or carbide and meticulously shaped to create the can’s tapered neck. Each die has a curved inner surface that matches the desired neck profile, delivering a smooth, consistent form with each pass.
Knockout Pins (Knockouts)
Positioned within the necking die, knockout pins work to eject the formed can body from the die after necking is complete. These cylindrical pins ensure a smooth transition, allowing for uninterrupted flow along high-speed production lines.
Guide Rings or Bushings
Guide rings and bushings play a vital role in maintaining proper alignment during the necking process. By guiding the can body into the necking die with precision, these components prevent misalignment and reduce wear on both the can and the die, ensuring flawless results.
Mandrels (Optional)
In certain necking operations, a mandrel is used to provide internal support to the can body. This cylindrical tool maintains the shape of the neck during forming, adding stability and helping to prevent deformations for an exact, uniform finish.
Die Sets and Holders
These structural elements hold the necking dies, knockouts, and other components in place, providing the necessary support for a stable necking operation. Die sets and holders ensure each part remains aligned and securely mounted, crucial for long-term durability and consistency in production.
