Cupper Tooling Products:

  • Blank & Draw Die: The foundation of the cupping process, this die set precisely cuts the aluminum blank and forms the initial cup shape.
  • Cupper Punch (Die Center∙Draw Horn∙Form Punch): Works in conjunction with the draw die to shape and form the can body during the cupping process.
  • Cut Edge: Provides a clean and precise cut on the can body edge, ensuring proper fit and function in downstream processes.
  • Draw Pad: Supports and controls the material during the drawing process, preventing distortion and wrinkles.
  • Lower Knife: Works in conjunction with the upper knife to trim excess material and create a finished edge on the can body.
  • Upper Knife: Completes the trimming process, ensuring a clean and consistent edge on the can body. (Include individual images for each product)
  • Non-Round Cupper Tooling: Offering brands a chance to break away from conventional designs, by incorporating non-round forms, companies can create visually striking packaging that enhances shelf appeal and grabs consumer attention. Non-Round Cupper Tooling enables the formation of can ends into distinctive shapes beyond the traditional circle, This innovation allows brands to align their packaging with their identity, making products more memorable and engaging, ultimately setting them apart in a crowded market.

Cupper Tooling: Precision Solutions for Beverage Can and Food Can Industry

Cupper Tooling plays a critical role in forming the top and bottom ends of a wide range of cans, including beverage cans for soda and beer, food cans for sauces and vegetables.
Using specialized cupper dies and punches, the cupping process transforms flat aluminum sheets into concave or domed sections for cans. This precision process requires high-quality cupper tooling to ensure consistency and efficiency in production.

Non-Round Cupper Tooling

Non-round cupper tooling forms can ends into shapes beyond the traditional circular design. Customers who use non-round cupper tooling are looking for an aesthetic appeal, adding a unique, visually appealing element to their metal packaging. This offers brands an opportunity to stand out on the shelf with distinctive packaging shapes.

The Cupper Press: The Birthplace of a Can

Picture a powerful stamping press where Cupper Tooling is used to transform flat aluminum coil stock into the cup-shape that forms the body of a can. This is the Cupper press, and what happens inside is nothing short of miraculous!

Coil Entry: A large coil of aluminum is flattened and fed into the cupper press, ready to be shaped.

Blank & Draw: In this multi-step process, the press moves up and down at a rate up to 750 strokes per minute. Each time the press makes a “stroke/hit” one cup is formed using the Cut Edge and the Blank & Draw Die. This means that with each hit of the press 2 things happen instantly. The first step sees the Cut Edge punching out a perfectly circular aluminum blank.

Incredibly, in this same hit, the blank is transformed into a cup. Here’s how it works:

The blank sits under the cupper punch, which has a cup-like shape.

As the press descends, the cupper punch forces the lubricated blank into the draw die cavity.

The draw pad within the die provides support to the blank, preventing wrinkles and distortion as it’s drawn into a cup shape.

The cut edge feature of the tooling ensures a clean and precise edge on the drawn cup.

Ejection: Once the cup is formed, a burst of air shoots up from the draw die and then sideways so that the cup is instantly ejected from the die, ready for the next stage of the can-making process.

Trimming (End Scrap Removal): The excess aluminum surrounding the drawn cups is considered end scrap and is trimmed away. This trimming process may involve upper and lower knives to ensure clean edges on the scrap material for efficient recycling.

Why Cupper Tooling Matters:

  • Precision: Accurate dies, punches, and supporting components are essential for forming perfect cups, which are critical for creating flawless cans.
  • Durability: Cupper tooling operates under high pressure and must withstand constant use. Durable materials and expert craftsmanship ensure long-lasting performance.
  • Efficiency: Well-designed tooling facilitates smooth material flow and quick cup ejection, maximizing production speed.
